By Dan Q.: On Saturday April 18th, 2 of boxing’s heaviest handed fighters in the 140-pound division will face off in Verona, New York. Ruslan “Siberian Rocky” Provodnikov (24-3) will step in the ring to meet Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse (36-3) in a fight, which the winner is expected to receive a title shot in his next bout.
The 2 competitors, known for taking part in fan friendly slugfests are expected to put on a show that is almost guaranteed to be a 2015 fight of the year candidate. Both fighters are coming off wins from their previous opposition after suffering heart breaking losses, Provodnikov finished and old Jose Luis Castillo via 5th round TKO in his home country of Russia after losing a controversial decision to Chris Algerie. While Lucas Matthysse came back in a Fight of the Year type battle with John Molina Junior at the Stub Hub Center in Los Angeles last April, then took care of Roberto Ortiz with a 2nd round knockout 5 monhs later in a bout that took place in Cincinnati, Ohio after suffering a loss to Danny “Swift” Garcia on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez fight that took place on Mexican Independance Day weekend of 2013.
Both fighters have the fan friendly come forward fighting style, which will make for a show that even the casual fight fan can and will appreciate. With Matthysse having the better footwork and jab of the 2 its expected he will use all of the ring in order to gain an advantage over Provodnikov, who has the tendency to gas out mid way through fights. The “Siberian Rocky” will have to do what he does best and live up to his nickname by putting his head in his opponent’s chest and bating Matthyse into a brawl. With the Argentine who has an 85% knockout ratio being arguably the hardest puncher in the welterweight division, an all out brawl with Ruslan seems to be something he will be willing to accommodate.
When the 2 power punchers meet April 18th the fireworks will go off and the fans that attend the event will be treated to a show that will be talked about with Gatti-Ward, Castillo-Corrales, Rios-Alvarado as one of the most eye pleasing fights to take place in recent memory. The only regret of this fight will be that it didn’t take place on network television for more fans to enjoy.
